Spectators at the WWE Crown Jewel event in Perth have gone viral for booing the American national anthem. Local performer Sophie Foster had the honour of singing the Star Spangled Banner, as well as Advance Australia Fair, in front of a packed house at RAC Arena.

Boos are clearly audible in the short clips posted on social media, which have racked up over 200,000 views. It was obviously nothing to do with Foster’s performance, which was first class, but more to do with the fact the anthem was sung at all. Foster also sung the Australian national anthem, to which fans could be heard loudly singing along. Foster, who is eight months pregnant, posted a series of photos and videos from the night but made no mention of the booing. Some American fans watching on were not impressed by booing. “That’s just so disrespectful. Like I understand we’re in a different country. But at least respect the artist. Good God it’s not that hard,” one fan said. “Wow I would never boo another country anthem… stay classy Australia,” another said. However, the majority of fans questioned the need for the Star Spangled Banner to be performed outside of America. “Never understood why WWE do the American national anthem In other countries when they are obviously gonna get booed,” one fan said. “To be expected, it’s not their anthem; it’s forcing a respect for people who are not from that nation. People boo the Canadian anthem in America, or other countries, in sports, or even the Olympics! So why is it not terrible when we do it? Strange thought it fine for us, not for them,” another said. “Why would you have the national anthem in Australia? How dumb,” another said. “They can boo all they want. It’s their right. Why should Americans be triggered by that?” Another added. “That’s honestly disrespectful from WWE. You’re hosting a show in Australia, where over 80 per cent of the crowd are Australians, yet you choose to perform the U.S. national anthem?” “OK, I am a proud American but why the hell are we playing our national anthem on foreign soil? Maybe I’m missing something but that seems kind of rude. Can’t blame the crowd for booing.” In the ring, fans were treated to a cracking night of action, which included Hollywood superstar John Cena’s final appearance on Australian soil. Cena and long-time foe AJ Styles wowed the crowd with a stunning bout that the actor eventually won with a trademark Attitude Adjustment finisher. Aussie wrestlers Rhea Ripley and Bronson Reed were both victorious, while in the main event, Seth Rollins defeated Cody Rhodes to to win the Crown Jewel Championship. There is one final WWE event in Perth on Monday night with Raw.
